Band Promo 103: Ten Creative Ways to Promote With Band Stickers

With hundreds of different uses, full color custom band stickers are one of the most versatile ways to market your music. Because of the low overhead costs associated with them, band stickers can be used in all kinds of different ways.

Consider these custom sticker indie band promotion ideas:

1) Commemorate a tour

Give your tour a clever name and immortalize it forever.

2) Collaborate with an artist

Got a friend who creates great art, in tune with the image of your band? Collaborate on a series of limited-run, collector’s edition stickers—when you run out of a certain design, that’s it, there’s no more.

3) Do cameos of band members

This obviously depends on how photogenic the members of your band are. (You might want to get an outside opinion on this one.) But collectible stickers of your band members can be an attention-getter, especially if you have on-stage personas. Think of them as your own personal baseball cards.

4) Include stickers in your jewel cases

Nothing says love like a little free (cool) stuff.

5) Have your fans vote on the next sticker design

Post possible designs on your webpage, and have your fans vote on their favorite for a chance to win something they might want (i.e., free tickets/t-shirts, a date with your lead singer.)

6) Put them under the windshield wipers of your fans’ cars during a gig

This basic play from the guerrilla marketing handbook is guaranteed to get your name out there.  Whether or not people love it or hate it depends on how cool your sticker is—and how much they like your music.

7) Tip your barista and/or bartender with stickers

Baristas and bartenders tend to be influential people, who talk to lots of other folks during the course of their day. Make a fan of them and you’re off to a good start in terms of word-of-mouth buzz. (Leaving a cash tip probably won’t hurt, either.)

8) Pin a stack to a community bulletin board

If your sticker designs are eye-catching, people will take them—and spread the glory of your band far and wide.

9) Stick them in captive audience locations (i.e., the bus stop, the gas pump)

Yet another guerrilla marketing ploy. But who’s not going to remember a sticker they saw in a bathroom stall for a Dead cover-band called Jerry’s Kids?

10) Use them instead of business cards

Business cards are easy to lose. Stickers (with your URL, and more info if you want) stick around.

In summary, full color custom vinyl stickers are an indispensable part of any comprehensive band promotion strategy. They’re inexpensive, eye-catching, versatile and easy-to-use.  When used in conjunction with an effective overall marketing and promo plan (website, posters, media kits, t-shirts, etc.) band stickers can have a huge impact in terms of buzz and exposure—for a relatively small amount of cash.
